Plant cocktails with antibacterial effect against weaning diarrhea in organic piglets - applied proof of concept. MAFFRA - II

2019

The aim is to develop a final proof-of-concept for a natural plant-based antimicrobial feed additive that prevents post-weaning diarrhea (PWD) in piglets and thereby reduces, ultimately replaces, the use of antibiotics and zinc oxide.

Based on very promising results from in vitro and preliminary in vivo trials, obtained with a specific plant cocktail (allicin-containing ramsons and acidic berries) in the recently finished MAFFRA phase one project, we aim to prove that the plant feed additive concept works in organic pig production by improving intestinal health and reducing PWD incidence. The project further optimizes production of antibacterial raw materials or 'side-streams', and optimizes the processing towards a final product. The project develops guidelines for obtaining best performing plant material and documents the effect of a new plant-based, multi-component feed additive to reduce piglet PWD incidence. In vitro/in vivo antimicrobial tests are followed by demonstration at a commercial organic pig farm supported by advisors. The project contributes to sustainable production and circular economy via use of new natural bioactive high-value crops, better utilization of side-streams and a more natural production of pigs. The plant products are expected to ensure less disease/mortality in organic pig production, considering that medical zinc oxide is not available in few years from now and political wishes to reduce antibiotic use. www.orgprints.org
